About

Hi,

I'm Emma!

I am and have been a lot of things.

I am a journalistm student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill – go Heels! I have been an assistant copy editor at The Daily Tar Heel. I am a sister to 10 (yes, 10!) and an aunt to 20 (yes, 20!). I have been a camp counselor who dressed up in funny outfits to make teenagers a little more willing to be weird.

I am a creator, a leader and a teammate. In attempts to describe myself I have written each of those words, and others, many times.

But at my core, I am a learner.

I believe every endeavor can be an opportunity to learn, whether it's about people, new skills or the world around you, and it's at the center of every project I take on.

Art in the Garden Feature

The Role: As editorial assistant with Triangle Media Partners – a publishing company that produces several magazines, blogs and online guides – I am called upon to help edit a written piece for grammatical and factual mistakes, write short little blurbs about a compilation of happenings or, as in this case, write a feature story for any one of the company's publications.

The Project: Every spring, sculptor Tinka Jordy holds an event called Art in the Garden where artists from the area and nearby display their creations in Tinka's own home garden for people to view and shop. Talk to Tinka and learn more about the event.

What I Learned About People: Tinka Jordy should have been heard from a very long time ago, but she is much too humble to have ever said so.

Skills I Learned: A little confidence in your work goes a long way. I agonized over this piece for hours over weeks. I assumed my editor would change every word, a total rewrite. Finally, I worked up the courage to submit. My editor made one change.

What I Learned About the World: Did you know there is a large group of artists in the central N.C. region who sculpt pieces specifically designed for display in a garden? Furthermore, while sculptors who design for traditional indoor display can sell their pieces from any museum, home or warehouse, garden sculptors have few places to display their work in the place they are intended to be seen.

The Square Dance Debacle

The Role: Assistant program director at Camp Arcadia in small-town northern Michigan, during which I created new programming events for all ages, led the setup, running and teardown of every event, and was as silly as can be.

The Project: OK, I'll admit, it's less of a project and more of a problem that needed solving. Every week, we threw a square dance, complete with southern western outfits, yee-haws and line dancing. The event is usually outside, but this week we were rained out. How to make a bunch of ninth and 10th graders to enjoy themselves while dancing inside a small, hot, crowded room? Put up an hour's worth of bandana decorations, throw in a couple current pop hits and convince their adult counselors to make a fool of themselves.

What I Learned About People: We all want to let go, have fun and dance like no one's watching. We just need to feel like we can. I watched a shy new camper break it down to the Cotton Eyed Joe after his counselor got all the steps wrong.

Skills I Learned: Your team responds to your response. When I saw the forecast, I had some moments of panic and it helped no one. After I calmed down, encouraged my team and gave clear directions, we hit the ground running.

What I Learned About the World: There is a free, accessible website that houses thousands of recordings of old vinyl records. Check it out on your next rainy day.

Drake Powell Feature Copy

The Role: One of The Daily Tar Heel's assistant copy editors, part a team of five who copy edits every story that The Daily Tar Heel publishes for style, accuracy, grammar, spelling, punctuation, clarity and more.

The Project: Just as always, edit the story.

What I Learned About People: Former Assistant Sports Editor Emma Moon has one of the most distinguishable voices in journalism I might have ever read, and certainly among my peers at the Hussman School of Journalism and Media.

Skills I Learned: Trust yourself. But it's okay to be cautious when the situation requires it.

What I Learned About the World: UNC basketball's up-and-coming star Drake Powell comes from a little highschool in Chatham County, which just so happens to be the same school that my good friend attended. And, the college sports recruitment process is fascinating.
